With recent international aid cuts, Abdulrashid shares that secondary school has stopped, and funding for Accelerated Education programming has also stopped.

This program helps older children who missed out on schooling catch up by covering two years' worth of primary education in one.

“We hope for a solution. For education, 256 students – all stopped, and 4 teachers are without work. They’re here and want to learn but can’t without teachers and support,” says Abdulrashid.

At time of interviews, teachers were still teaching, and students were unaware of likely education changes.

Some students have told Abdulrashid, without education and work at home, they’d rather risk migrating abroad saying, “We’ll die at sea and be food of fish because there’s nothing for us here.”

Abdulrashid was a teacher in Sudan, his third and fourth children, twins, were born two days before the war started last year. The bullets started flying and the university-educated Abdulrachid, his wife, and children fled for their lives. Eleven of his neighbors were killed. They arrived in June of 2023 and were brought to Farchana. In October, he interviewed for the position of school director and he received the job.

The Youth Manifesto presents the Refugee Education Council’s vision for the education of refugee and displaced learners. Developed in 2022 under Canada’s Together for Learning campaign, it amplifies the voices of refugee and displaced youth often excluded from global education decisions. The Manifesto outlines a collective vision to ensure that all refugee and displaced children and youth have access to quality, inclusive, and lifelong learning opportunities.

The Manifesto is grounded in five core themes of inclusion, mental health and psychosocial support, digital learning, gender equality, and accountability. The Manifesto calls on governments, organizations, and citizens to take concrete action to make refugee education a global priority. It serves as both a declaration of principles and a roadmap for change, emphasizing the need for sustainable, youth-led, and equitable education systems.
