Dinah never had the chance to go to school. For her grandchildren, she wants a different future.

In Kamwenge District, Uganda, Dinah is the primary caregiver for twelve-year-old Javira and his three siblings. She grew corn, cassava and beans to feed her family, selling what was left to cover other needs. But her earnings weren’t always enough for school fees. Sometimes, Javira was sent home from class, leaving his friends behind.

In 2021, Javira joined World Vision’s child sponsorship program. That same year, Dinah joined a group of 25 families who learned new skills and began saving together.

With improved farming techniques and access to loans through the savings group, Dinah can cover school fees without selling her crops before they mature. She is building the income and support her family needs to keep her grandchildren learning.

Watch Dinah and Javira’s story to see how supporting a family can help a child stay in school.

Helping children overcome barriers to education

Poverty, conflict and discrimination are among the reasons so many children lack access to education. Even when tuition is free, families may struggle to afford books, uniforms and transportation. World Vision works with families, schools and communities to address these connected barriers. Its education programs provide learning resources and support for teachers and caregivers, while broader work helps families improve their incomes. For Dinah, farming skills and community savings provide tools she can keep using to support her grandchildren’s education over time.

Supporting education through lasting investment

Dinah and Javira’s story shows what reliable support can mean for one family. Across World Vision Canada’s education work, donor support helped achieve these results in fiscal year 2025:

  • 1,446,781 people reached through education programs.
  • $15.2 million invested across 67 education programs
  • 1,073,726 children received school supplies and educational resources
