Holy Week invites followers of Jesus into the sacred centre of the Christian faith. In the week leading up to Easter, God revealed His salvation plan in the final days of Jesus’ life on earth. Here, we encounter the heart of God’s redemptive love. These days remind us that salvation was not accomplished through power or force, but through obedience, sacrificial love and the victory of life over death.

This Holy Week devotional will prompt you to reflect on what Christ has done for you and how you are shaped by His saving grace. As we walk through moments of praise, sacrifice and triumph, we are called to examine our hearts and renew our response to God’s invitation. This Easter Bible reading plan draws us into remembrance, worship and hope. And from that hope, Christ sends us forward as people who live sacrificially, carrying the light of His resurrection and the promise of new life.

Palm Sunday: the humble King enters

Read

  • Matthew 21:1–11
  • Zechariah 9:9
  • Psalm 118:25–29

What happened on Palm Sunday

The first day of our Holy Week devotional begins with Jesus' Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem, riding on a donkey. He fulfilled ancient prophecy and revealed that His kingdom is one of humility, peace and gentle authority. The crowds welcomed Him with palm branches and shouts of “Hosanna!” They praised Him thinking He would free them from Roman oppression. But Jesus came to do a deeper work—free us from the oppression of sin and death!

Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You for coming to save me from the powers of sin and death. I welcome as King in my life and surrender to Your leadership. Help me to let go of any preconceived ideas of who You are and see You rightly. May I walk in the same humility You showed as You entered Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. Amen.

Personal reflection

  • What would it look like for Jesus to enter my life more fully today?
  • Are there any misconceptions I have about Jesus that I need to let go of?
  • Where is God inviting me to practice humility?

Application

Place something physically at your door as a reminder to welcome Christ into every part of your week.

Holy Monday: Jesus cleanses the temple

Read

  • Matthew 21:12–17
  • Isaiah 56:7
  • Micah 6:6–8

What happened on Holy Monday

During the Passover celebration, money changers were extorting people as they visited Jerusalem. A place that was intended for connection with God had turned into a marketplace.

Jesus entered the temple and drove out the corrupt businesses and restored it as a place of prayer. His actions showed that true worship involves purity of heart and a life aligned with God’s justice and mercy.

Prayer

Lord, search my heart and clear away anything that clutters my devotion to You. Purify my heart and make my life a place where Your presence is welcome and Your love is evident. Restore in me a desire for connection with You and deepen my focus in prayer. Amen.

Personal reflection

  • What “tables” in my life need to be overturned?
  • What distracts me most from prayer?
  • How can I pursue integrity this week?

Application

Clear out one space in your home and set it aside as a simple prayer space for the rest of Holy Week.

Spy Wednesday: beautiful act and a betrayal

Read

  • Mark 14:1–11
  • Psalm 41:9

What happened on Spy Wednesday

A woman anointed Jesus with expensive perfume worth a year’s wages. This extravagant act of devotion was also symbolic, anointing the feet of the Passover lamb. As Judas Iscariot witnessed this act, he was filled with greed and resolved to betray Jesus. This day highlights the contrast between wholehearted love and divided loyalty.

Prayer

Lord, You gave everything for me and I want to respond with sincere gratitude and worship. Help me to give extravagantly of my life to You and others. Receive my worship, even when it feels like I have very little to give. May I continue to be faithful to follow Your heart and not lose sight of the great reward of knowing You. Amen.

Personal reflection

  • What is one beautiful offering I can give Jesus this week?
  • Are there areas where I feel divided or hesitant in my faith?
  • What does wholehearted love look like today?

Application

Give Jesus something costly. Maybe it’s more time in prayer or Bible reading, a generous gift to help others or a habit you need to surrender.

Read

  • John 13:1–15
  • Luke 22:14–20
  • Matthew 26:36–46
  • 1 Corinthians 11:23-26

What happened on Maundy Thursday

Jesus washed His disciples’ feet, instituted the Lord’s Supper and gave the command to love one another. In deep anguish, he prayed at the Garden of Gethsemane, committing to His Father’s will. He demonstrated service, sacrifice and surrender.

Prayer

Jesus, thank You for demonstrating sacrifice and serving others. Teach me to follow Your example of humility and love by serving others with the same grace You have shown me. In times of Communion, help me to remember Your broken body and blood poured out to cover my sins. Bring me to a place where I can fully surrender my will to Yours. Amen.

Personal reflection

  • Whose “feet” is God calling me to metaphorically wash?
  • How does communion remind me of Jesus’ love?
  • What is God asking me to surrender?

Application

Serve someone in a practical way today quietly, without recognition. It could be making a meal for someone in your community, or a donation to support vulnerable children.

Good Friday: the sacrifice that saves

Read

  • Isaiah 53:3–6
  • John 19:16–30
  • Luke 23:44–49

What happened on Good Friday

Jesus was put on trial, brutally tortured and condemned to crucifixion. He bore the weight of humanity’s sin and experienced separation from the Father. He died with forgiveness on His lips and love in His heart. The temple curtain tore, symbolizing open access to God through His sacrifice.

Prayer

Jesus, thank You for the cross. Thank You for Your love and for suffering greatly to make a way for me to be reconciled to the Father. Thank You for experiencing separation from God so that I never have to. Help me to walk in victory over sin in this life. May I live for You in all I do. Amen.

Personal reflection

  • What part of my life most needs the healing of the cross?
  • How does Jesus’ death reveal God’s love for me?
  • Is there anything I need to lay down today?

  • Psalm 130:1–6
  • Acts 2:31
  • Revelation 1:17-18

What happened on Holy Saturday

Jesus’ body lay in the tomb. The disciples scattered in grief, fear and uncertainty. Holy Saturday invites us to sit in stillness and trust that God works even when we cannot see it. Even Jesus rested on the Sabbath. While the disciples waited, Jesus was doing a marvelous work—proclaiming victory over death and Hell.

Prayer

God, come and meet me in the quiet, empty places. Where I am struggling with grief, fear or uncertainty, teach me to wait with trust and hope. I know You are good and You have good plans in store. Help me to rest in Your faithfulness even when I can’t see the solution. I surrender to Your perfect will. Amen.

Personal reflection

  • Where am I waiting for God to move?
  • How comfortable am I with silence?
  • What does hope look like on a day like today?

What happened on Ascension Day

He promised the Holy Spirit, blessed them and ascended into heaven. This moment shifts the story from Jesus’ earthly ministry to our Spirit‑empowered participation in His ongoing work.

  • How can I respond to the Great Commission in my daily life?
  • What resources has God entrusted to me that I can use for His mission?

Application

The Great Commission includes teaching, serving and going, but it also includes giving as a joyful act of obedience. Share your skills with a local church, community or ministry. Or, give a gift that blesses someone else, whether it’s a friend, a neighbour or a stranger.

Final thoughts in our Holy Week Easter devotional

The Ascension doesn’t end the story, it launches ours. Jesus went to the Father so we can go into the world. He sends us out with His authority, His Spirit and His love. As you give, bless, serve and live for His name, you step into the very mission He entrusted to His followers on the mountain.
