Equality for Girls’ Access to Learning (EGAL) in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) was implemented by World Vision in partnership with Make Music Matter (MMM) and local, provincial and national education, gender and social service ministries. The program occurred in the two districts of Dibaya and Kananga in the Kasaï-Central province from 2020 to 2023. Within EGAL, MMM implemented the Healing in Harmony (HiH) approach. Healing in Harmony addresses psychosocial trauma as a barrier to learning for vulnerable girls and young women between the ages of 8 and 18 years who are survivors of trauma and gender-based violence, both in and out of school. This research initiative used a step-wedged design and included 438 girls who completed the HiH program. Measures of depression, anxiety and self-esteem were examined during the program and after completion of the program. In addition, the research examined how changes in these mental health and well-being measures correlated with access to education. The research study found significant improvements in mental health outcomes as measured by depression and anxiety, providing robust evidence that HiH program participants experienced changes in their mental health and well-being outcomes over the course of the program.
