What is Giving Season?

It’s fall. It’s winter. It’s Christmastime. It’s Giving Season.

The calendar flips. The days are shortened. The nights are lengthened. The temperatures drop.

Welcome to Giving Season.

But what is Giving Season, exactly?

Giving Season is the time of year when people, families and organizations come together to support charities and causes they care about.

This is done through donations, volunteering and other acts of generosity.

And when is Giving Season?

There’s no set start and end date to Giving Season. It usually runs from the beginning of October to the end of December.

It builds through the fall, gains momentum during the holidays and carries through to the close of the year.

So, how do I participate in Giving Season?

That’s the best part. There’s no singular way to “do” Giving Season.

You can give your time. Or your resources. Or your voice. Or just your attention and presence.

The meaning of Giving Season

The philosophy behind Giving Season isn’t, “we all have to give something.”

It’s: “ we all have something to give:”

  • Time to lend a hand, volunteer or just be there for someone who needs an attentive ear and a friendly voice.
  • Donations that support a cause, make a difference and contribute to meaningful, transformative work.
  • Resources such as food, clothing, supplies or other items you can live without, but someone else may critically need.
  • Attention to learn about an issue, listen to someone’s story and to better understand a cause you care about.
  • Skills such as your talents, knowledge or expertise to help someone get through a tough spot and to the other side.
  • Words to speak up about issues that matter to you, share important information or encourage others to get involved.
  • Kindness through a thoughtful gesture, a helping hand, an unexpected check-in or a simple act of care to make someone’s day brighter.

Or maybe you’re not quite sure. And that’s okay.

Sometimes, giving looks like something we haven’t thought of yet.

Is GivingTuesday part of Giving Season?

It is.

GivingTuesday (written as one word) always occurs the Tuesday after U.S. Thanksgiving. It was created in 2012 as a day to counterbalance the hustle of the holiday shopping rush with the spirit of generosity.

While the date seems arbitrary, it’s anything but.

GivingTuesday was intentionally positioned after two of the biggest shopping days of the year: Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

It’s a reminder that the holiday season isn’t just about buying stuff.

It’s also about what you can give of yourself to help others in need.

Why does Giving Season matter?

Because generosity can create change.

Giving Season brings attention to charities, causes and communities that need support not just during the holidays, but throughout the year.

All it takes is one person and one small act:

That’s what one person can do.

And when individual acts of generosity come together, they become something bigger. Stronger. More impactful.

Giving Season reminds us of what can happen when, collectively, we offer what we can of ourselves:

Charity becomes change . And change becomes life.

How do I get involved with Giving Season?

You don’t need a plan. You don’t need a lot of money. You don’t need permission.

You just need to start.

Maybe that means jotting down some fundraising ideas. Maybe it means donating whatever you can to a cause or charity that’s close to your heart.

Or maybe it’s as simple as texting a friend who’s been quiet lately, just to check in.

Think of Giving Season as an invitation to:

  • Give something
  • Do something
  • Say something

It doesn’t need to be extravagant. It doesn’t have to solve everything everywhere for everyone.

It just has to matter.

What happens when Giving Season ends?

The calendar will flip again. The days will lengthen. The nights will shorten. The temperatures will rise.

And Giving Season, as a season, will end.

But the idea and meaning behind it does not. Because every season:

  • The needs Giving Season responds to still exist…
  • …As does the transformative good generosity can do.

The causes we care about don’t disappear once the holiday decorations come down. Those who need a helping hand in October may still need it in July.

And most importantly, the opportunity to give our time, resources, skills, attention, voices and kindness never expires.

What is Giving Season? A reminder that we all have something to give

Giving Season isn’t really about a season.

It’s about what we can give, no matter how small it may seem. And what can happen when we give it.

We all have something to give.

And there’s no season for that. It’s just always.
