At just 15 years old, Razia* (name changed) arrived at the Larak Basic Health Center (BHC) burdened by a range of psychological challenges, including persistent negative thoughts, sleep disturbances, nightmares and emotional distress.
After a thorough medical checkup, she was referred to the female Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) counselor for specialized care. During her initial sessions, it became clear that Razia had been engaged at her early age; a decision made without her understanding or consent. This early engagement left her feeling powerless, isolated, and emotionally upset.
Razia shares her story
She was enrolled in the MHPSS program, and after attending five consecutive sessions, she began to show significant improvement. Razia shared her journey in her own words:
“My name is Razia, I am 15 years old. I was engaged when I was just eight. At the time, I didn’t understand what it meant; I only saw my parents happy. My father who was saying, that he felt pleased and more comfortable.
As I grew up, I realized that my future had been decided without me. I felt ignored, heartbroken, and alone. I couldn’t express my feelings to anyone. Life felt meaningless, and the thought of marriage only deepened my pain.
One day, I came to this clinic by chance. My heart was heavy due to sadness, and I was close to tears. But for the first time, someone; a kind MHPSS counselor; spoke to me gently, encouraged me to talk, and treated me with compassion.
In each session, I felt supported and gradually found the courage to share my thoughts and emotions. She reminded me that my feelings matter, that my voice is important , and that no one has the right to make decisions for me.
After five sessions, I feel a significant change in my mindset and behavior. It is as if a new life with new hopes has begun for me here in Larak. I am extremely grateful to World Vision for establishing this clinic in our remote village and for providing life-saving support.”
