Growing up in the rural villages of Mangochi, Malawi, Shida Nthengulo’s childhood was filled with hardship. Her parents struggled to provide for her and her siblings. Education felt like an impossible dream as poverty threatened to pull her away from school.
But Shida was determined. She knew that education was her only way out. Then, a glimmer of hope appeared when she was enrolled in the World Vision sponsorship program. Through this initiative, Shida received school fees, essential supplies, and most importantly, encouragement to keep pursuing her education.
The letters from her sponsor became a beacon of hope. Each word written to her reminded her that someone believed in her potential. “Those letters were my motivation,” Shida recalls. “Whenever I felt like giving up, I would read them and remind myself that my dreams were valid.”
Her turning point came when she passed her primary school exams with flying colors and was selected to attend secondary school. Despite the challenges, she remained focused, to become a nurse she is now, serving lives and women in productive age.
Shida works as a community nurse at Salima District Hospital, where she dedicates her life to helping others. Not only has she transformed her own life, but she is also able to support her three children by providing them with the education she once feared she would never have.
Looking back, Shida is overwhelmed with gratitude. “Without the support from World Vision Malawi, I wouldn’t be where I am today. They didn’t just give me school fees; they gave me hope and a future.”
Shida’s story is an evidence of the power of sponsorship programs and the difference they can make in the lives of children facing adversity. She now inspires young girls in her community to stay in school, proving that with determination and support, dreams can indeed come true.
