Samaan has one dream for his daughter, Sucdi. He wants her to learn, to work and to build something of her own. In a displacement camp in a small city in Somalia, that kind of hope takes courage.
Tens of thousands of families live here, most of them fleeing conflict and arriving with almost nothing. When you’ve lost that much, thinking about the future can feel hopeless.
But, that began to change when World Vision opened a child-friendly space in the camp.
Where children can be children
Sucdi comes every day. She reads, writes, draws and helps her classmates keep up with their lessons.
“I love learning and I also love to play. Here, I have both.”
- Sucdi
Abdilahi, the principal at the space, watching Sucdi arrive early and push to be first in class. Her enthusiasm fills him with something he hadn’t felt in a long time. Pride. Hope. Joy.
Word spread quickly and families from surrounding villages began sending their children to the space, too, bringing both excitement and new needs. Some children arrive without food in their bellies, their hunger making it difficult to learn. But the space is already changing what’s possible here. Beyond lessons, it offers something the displacement camp cannot: a safe, structured way for children to simply be children.
This is part of what supporters like you help make possible. Every four minutes, a community member somewhere receives what they need to better protect a child. In Somalia, where hope can feel out of reach, a young girl is reading, writing and dreaming. She's doing it because supporters like you show up for children around the world. Thank you for showing up.
