A Mother-to-Mother group from Rock City, South Sudan, shows off the bounty from its harvest. World Vision Hong Kong helped kick off the project in 2016 and was joined by UNICEF in 2020. There are 15 such groups in Juba County, each consisting of 15 mothers.

Mama bears: doing it for the kids

Groups of mothers in South Sudan have organized themselves as community farmers under the moniker “Mother-to-Mother.” This carousel showcases how the group is enhancing their livelihood and promoting health and food security for their families.

Mother-to-Mother is a group of mothers in Juba County, South Sudan who have organized to practice community farming. These are women who have survived war, internal displacement and sexual violence. With donor support from World Vision they are becoming successful farmers, growing and selling nutritious food that earns them a living and keeps their children healthy.

Donor support provides seeds, water cans, hoes, and water tanks and supplies 5,000 litres of water to each Mother-to-Mother group for irrigation every month.

The women participating in mother-to-mother are fiercely and joyfully transforming their community and protecting their children from malnutrition. The project is scheduled to end in December 2024 after a 10-year run, but Mother-to-Mother will continue on after being set up for success. The project has targeted a reduction in global acute malnutrition and in 2023 recorded an 8 per cent decline in Juba.
