World Vision’s Global 6K gave our church an amazing opportunity to better understand the plight of the global poor and it was wonderful to see whole families engaged in something meaningful that makes a real difference. We also found the Global 6K really helpful in providing an opportunity for our church to connect in our community in relevant ways. It was easy to invite unchurched friends to join us for this fun and inspiring event. We found the Global 6K quite impactful in terms of discipleship and mission for our church, and we look forward to building on last year’s success.

When I was considering joining Team World Vision for my first half marathon in 2016 (followed by my first full marathon in 2017) – my initial thought was “Can I actually do this? I’m not really a runner.” Then the excitement of taking on a new challenge kicked in and it was the beginning of a great journey.
The time I spent training allowed me to reflect on a lot of things. It taught me about commitment and self-discipline. It pushed me outside my comfort zone and allowed me to grow physically, mentally and spiritually. The juxtaposition is that even though it was tough at times, it was also very therapeutic, restorative and definitely rewarding. YOU CAN DO THIS!

In 2018, Richmond Hill Christian Community Church participated in World Vision’s Global 6K. It was our first time as a church being a part of this meaningful event. We thank God, we had over 100 participants and raised over $18,000 for clean water. Providing clean water to the underprivileged is always on my mind. We are looking forward to having more people to attend this event next year.

Parkdale United Church’s experience with the Global 6K was energizing, fun and participatory. We had 70 team members ranging in age from 5 years old to 82 years old. Plus, we raised $10,050 for the water projects in Mali, Africa. Immediately after our celebration of this event, we committed to doing it again next year. We praise God for this experience

You may not be ready for the big decision to run a half or full marathon. So don’t. Make the decision later. Right now, I just start with a commitment to try. If it feels good, keep going. If it doesn’t, change it up or stop. Experiment with yourself and see where your limits are. You won’t know where those limits are until you step out and try.

In 2018, for the second year in a row, our church participated in the Global 6K for Water through World Vision Canada. Although I was injured, I was determined to sign up anyway. It was a leap of faith for me to commit to something I wasn’t sure I could accomplish. I thought of those who live in need, those who retrieve water every day in order to survive. I told myself I would do it this year, even in a wheelchair.
I invited three of our congregates to be our team captains. They were all different in character, culture and availability, but they combined their giftings to put together a big team. I witnessed our teammates that they are part of a global movement driven by the love and mercy from above. Thank you, Team World Vision, for sparking a fire within us to move our feet for a good cause.
- Rev. Raymond Cheng – East Toronto Chinese Baptist Church
Sometimes things seem impossible. But with a strong team behind you, a humble approach, determination, and a strong plan, you can reach your goal.
My motto is: It’s my race, so it’s my pace. I never compare myself to anyone else on the course, I stay true to my training, encourage others, and rest in the knowledge that I’ve had the courage to do try something the majority of others are too scared to even consider.
