Four-year-old Ruth, a sponsored child, focuses on building a tower of numbered blocks at the early childhood education centre in her Pacificadores community in Peru. The numbers on the blocks go beyond five, which is the name and goal of a World Vision Canada campaign. Health problems such as malnutrition, malaria and lack of proper immunization account for nearly seven million deaths in children under age five each year. But the Beyond 5 ​initiative advocates and helps establish programs for kids, including Ruth, to make sure a health scare that is preventable and treatable doesn’t get in the way of playtime.
