Confronting Child Hunger in Angola

Rufina, 5, smacks her lips as she finishes her bowl of high-protein porridge. Her mother Natalie, 39, sighs in relief as she spoons the porridge into her younger daughter, Cassinda, 3. It took two-and-a-half days for this family to walk to the World Vision feeding centre in Lunge, in the Huambo province of Angola. "The little ones walked so slowly," she recalls. "We found it difficult to come as we feel so weak. But we have no food at home."

World Vision's Dr. Ana Manguera understands how difficult it is for families to travel through dangerous terrain still peppered with land mines planted during years of civil war. She explains, "We always integrate our activities. We need to reduce suffering through food and vaccinations."

Thus, Rufina's family received not only high-protein food supplements but also seeds and tools to take home.

With the help of Crisis Child Partners like you, World Vision has distributed emergency food, seeds, and tools to some 1,000 needy families in Angola. Children eat nourishing lunches at school and attend special farming classes. "They learn to farm at school," says Jonathan White, operations director of World Vision Angola. "Crops are then fed back to the children, or they can be sold and the funds come back to the school."
