Dear Friend,

On March 4th the Canadian federal budget was released. World Vision was in Ottawa on that day and had a chance to examine the budget. While we are pleased that both the Throne Speech and the budget statement made reference to Canadian leadership on improving maternal and child heath, we are concerned that the budget does not seem to provide any specific or new money to support immediate and concrete actions to stop preventable deaths. As we continue our discussions with our government, supported by you, we will press for more information on what real money is available to save children's lives.

"Most of my children were born with a blood problem that could well have caused their death had they not had the fantastic care they received. It breaks my heart to know that millions of Moms and babies do not have access to the most fundamental of care that should be readily available."

What are the main killers of children under-five? In almost 80% of the cases, neglect is the main cause of death. Not the neglect of parents or family members, but rather the lack of attention and priority given by many governments to the basic health needs of children—access to basic health care for them and their moms, access to clean water and good sanitation. World Vision has produced a video illustrating the main causes of under-five child death and what we can do about it. Please share this video with others to inform them about the problem, and to get them involved in making child and maternal health a priority for all governments.
Another great way to get involved is to attend the Spring 2010 Church Leaders Forum where you will learn how to mobilize your church and community to be a force for justice in the world.
Thanks to those who responded to the question in the last e-mail about your reasons for caring about child health. We have included one of your responses on the right. We will use these and others in future communications.
You will be hearing from us again in early April just before World Health Day on April 7th. We will be sending you a fun activity to mark that day and to continue to show the Canadian government that you believe that five years is NOT a child's lifetime.
Sincerely,
The Advocacy Campaign Team
