Widow of Canadian jazz legend donates portion of proceeds from auction of Oscar’s personal effects

MISSISSAUGA, Ont (October 19, 2015) – World Vision is pleased to announce that Kelly Peterson, widow of legendary Canadian jazz pianist Oscar Peterson, has donated a portion of the proceeds of a recent online auction of her late husband’s personal effects. The auction, which was conducted via eBay, gave jazz fans in Canada and around the world the opportunity to bid on a number of items, including instruments, clothing and other equipment used by Oscar Peterson during his musical career, which spanned more than 50 years.

Both Oscar and Kelly Peterson are long-time supporters of World Vision’s efforts to help children and families in need around the world. They first became child sponsors in 1993 and in addition to continuing to sponsor numerous children in several countries, Mr. Peterson also performed at World Vision-sponsored events. The funds donated from the proceeds of the recent online auction will be used to fund World Vision’s community development work, which helps provide children with the tools they need for a brighter future.

Quotes:

“Oscar and I both shared a great deal of affection for the many children we supported through World Vision Canada,” said Kelly Peterson, Oscar’s widow. “This auction was a fitting tribute to his generosity and a way to continue his passionate support for the work of World Vision. I am gratified that more children in need around the world are benefitting from Oscar’s legacy through this donation. I’m certain he would also be pleased.”

“On behalf of World Vision, I am pleased to accept Kelly Peterson’s donation in memory of her late husband, who used his music to educate, enlighten and entertain millions of people around the world,” Michael Messenger, president and CEO of World Vision Canada says. “We are extremely grateful that Mrs. Peterson is continuing to generously support our organization and gave jazz fans an opportunity to own a piece of music history.”
