Barrick and World Vision have teamed up with local residents in Peru in a collaborative approach to tackle poverty issues in communities surrounding the company's mines in Peru. The partnership started in May 2003, when Barrick made an investment of US$1 million over five years to help impoverished families near its Pierina mine in the mountainous rural region of northern Peru. Building on the success of the first program, in 2007 Barrick contributed an additional US$1.3 million to support the start up of a similar project near its Lagunas Norte mine, located on the western flank of the Peruvian Andes. World Vision is complementing Barrick's funding through its child sponsorship program, which is supporting over 3,000 children in these areas.
The most recent collaboration began in July 2011, with Barrick Gold’s contribution of $500,000 towards a World Vision project in the district of Quiruvilca, Peru. This initiative is also supported by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and aims to achieve improved economic and social development for local households, especially women, youth and disadvantaged groups where there is an accelerated increase in mining revenue.
“Barrick has had a long-standing relationship with World Vision that has helped improve the lives of thousands of people in the communities neighboring our operations in Peru. The latest initiative will support the people of Quiruvilca, particularly women, youth and people with disabilities, in their efforts to achieve long-term sustainable development. It is another example of how the public and private sector can collaborate with communities to maximize the benefits of mining, ”says Aaron Regent, Barrick’s president and CEO. |

Thanks to funding from Barrick, these young children in Peru have received educational materials and supplies.
