Global Statistics on People Affected/Infected

  • The number of people living with HIV in the world today (2007): 33 million 1 
  • Number of seconds that pass between each new HIV infection worldwide: approximately 12 seconds (more than five new infections each minute.) 2
  • The number of people who die each day of AIDS: 5,479 (Approximately 2 million deaths every 365 days—more than three deaths every minute.) 3

The Disproportionate Impact on Children

  • The estimated number of children (under 15) living with HIV worldwide (2007): 2.0 million 4
  • The percentage of the 2.3 million children with HIV who have access to life-saving antiretroviral medications: Less than 5 per cent 5
  • The number of children who have lost one or both parents to AIDS: An estimated 12 million (The number is projected to reach 14 million by 2015.) 6

The Case in Sub-Saharan Africa
