HIV and AIDS Quiz Show

Objective:   To reinforce an understanding of the issues surrounding HIV and AIDS
Time:  30 minutes
Materials:  Blackboard, list of questions and answers (provided)
Group Size:  Any

Instructions
Note: This activity is best conducted after previewing the Breaking the Silence presentation slide show and the HIV and AIDS Photo Essay three-minute Flash animation that can be downloaded for free here
.

  1. Write each of the possible trivia responses (found below) randomly on the blackboard.
  2. Divide the class into two teams. Appoint, or have someone volunteer to act as quiz show host. 
  3. Provide the Host with the questions listed below. Explain that when the Host asks a question, the first team to make a buzzer noise must approach the blackboard and circle/check the word they think is the correct answer to the question. If they are correct, their team gains a point. If they are incorrect, erase the circle/check and deduct a point from their team.
  4. The team with the most points at the end of the question period wins.

  • Where do the majority of people (60%) with HIV live? (sub-Saharan Africa)
  • Which group of people is most impacted by HIV and AIDS? (women and children)
  • What does the I stand for in AIDS? (immune)
  • What does the V stand for in HIV? (virus)
  • What word bests describes the phrase, "a stain, criticism or blame on one's reputation" (stigma)
  • How is HIV transmitted? (HIV-Infected bodily fluid)
  • How many AIDS orphans are there worldwide? (15 million)
