World Vision at Work in Several Current Crises

World Vision currently has staff on the ground assessing and meeting the need for assistance in the wake of several recent natural disasters.

Philippines
In the wake of a direct hit by Typhoon Durian in the Philippines' Bicol region, World Vision continues to assess and meet the needs of those affected by the storm.

World Vision is putting a plan into action that will provide food and non-food items to 20,000 people. This target number of beneficiaries is likely to be increased as the full scope of the typhoon's destruction is assessed. World Vision has been closely coordinating with local government, as well as national and provincial disaster councils on the assistance efforts.

"We will ensure that the needs of the people, especially the children, are addressed," said Elnora Avarientos, national director World Vision Philippines. "The people will need food, blankets, mattresses, medicines, tents, and all the basics required to survive the destruction and damage to their homes."

Beside providing relief supplies, World Vision is also preparing to establish Child Friendly Spaces to help children recover from the trauma they have experienced. These programs provide a safe place for children to play and receive emotional support.

Kenya
In western Kenya, World Vision is at work as the Nzoia River has burst its banks, wreaking havoc in the Busia district.

World Vision has set up a flood response center in the area and has hired boats to evacuate individuals in flood-affected areas. Community members will be moved to higher ground in Budalango.

The government of Kenya has food positioned in the region that will allow World Vision to provide immediate food aid. World Vision's supply chain department in Kenya is now working to obtain non-food items including blankets, mosquito nets, tarpaulins, chlorine tablets, water containers, bottled water, and mobile toilets.

Somalia
Heavy rain has also caused wide-spread flooding in regions of Somalia. World Vision is currently working in the districts of Bualle, Sakow, and Salagle.

A total of 88 villages have been either partially or completely flooded, with 15,000 households being affected. Most flood victims have lost their survival support systems such as household and cooking utensils, bedding, etc.

World Vision is currently distributing survival kits, water-purification tablets, and food rations to flood victims in some of the affected areas.

World Vision is a Christian relief, development, and advocacy organization dedicated to working with children, families, and communities to overcome poverty and injustice. As followers of Jesus, we are motivated by God's love to serve all people regardless of race, religion, gender, or ethnicity.
