If you don't feel like watching another holiday movie, why not try something different? World Vision Canada President Dave Toycen recommends four flicks that will bring the world into your home.
Va, Vis, et Deviens (Live and Become)
"A poor Christian boy in Ethiopia flees his country in the 1980s along with thousands of Falasha Jews migrating to Israel. Hoping that an upper-class family will adopt him in Israel, his mother tells him to pretend to be a Jewish orphan. There is much in this movie to provoke great conversations."
Akeelah and The Bee
"An African-American girl enters and wins spelling bees, despite opposition from her mother. To her surprise, the 11-year-old soon finds her talent taking her in new directions as she continues to compete. The performance by her coach, played by Laurence Fishburne, is outstanding."
Shake Hands with The Devil
"A compelling documentary based on the book by Roméo Dallaire, a Canadian general who led a group of peacekeeping soldiers into Rwanda during the 1994 genocide. At times, it's hard to watch, but do see it. Dallaire is one of Canada's genuine heroes, flawed yet fully human."
Moolaadé
"A realistic portrayal of female circumcision in a small West African village, but still full of hope and humour. A strong-willed woman, who manages to shield her own daughter from mutilation, tries to help a group of other girls secure the same right. This film is one of my all-time favourites."
