Why not spend an evening watching a good movie? These five flicks are World Vision Canada President Dave Toycen's favourites from the past year.

"Water" (Mongrel Media)
Dave says: A fictional story from India at the time of the independence movement in the 1930s based on the real-life practice of marrying off young girls to older men. "Water" follows the riveting story of a seven-year-old girl after her husband dies.

"The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" (Buena Vista)
Dave says: An absolute gem. The story retains its childlike quality while exploring the deep themes of evil, redemption, and mystery.

"Syriana" (Warner Bros.)
Dave says: A dark picture of the arms trade and the incredible compromises made by individuals and governments that wreak violence in our world. The movie is a reminder of the importance of bringing a message of hope and trust while waiting for justice and peace in our world. The disturbing scenes of torture are not for the faint-hearted.

"The Constant Gardener" (Focus Features)
Dave says: This is a dramatic art piece that explores the controversy around using the poor to test drugs. The desire to treat the HIV/AIDS pandemic becomes a twisted plot of politics, big business, and taking advantage of the poor.

"Capote" (UA/Sony Pictures Classics)
Dave says:This disturbing story of a conflicted and complicated man centres almost exclusively on Truman Capote’s experiences while writing "In Cold Blood." As he documents heartless murders committed by two killers in Kansas, he too enters into manipulation and dishonesty in order to get the story.
