Mobile Technology Helps Haitians

For nearly six months, families in Haiti have endured the loss of homes, the death of family members, the struggle and uncertainty of everyday life. But there is one thing residents of the Corail camp for internally displaced people are getting a reprieve from: long, slow lineups to receive their rations.
World Vision Canada brought its new technology for distributing humanitarian aid provisions—the Last Mile Mobile Solution (LMMS)—to Haiti in May. Since then, the hand-held computers and personalized ration cards have helped staff serve Corail residents more quickly and efficiently.
Making Life a Little Easier
LMMS makes life a little easier for people in the camp, allowing families to spend less time in line and more time together. In addition, the personal information of recipients is secure and on file for future use, fairness is improved since the system recognizes duplicates in ration distribution and less paperwork means that aid workers have more time to assist those in need.
“This time with the people is so important,” says Otto Farkas, Acting Vice President for International and Canadian Programs. “That’s when we can look into their eyes, hear what’s on their minds. It’s when we do our best aid work.”
An Efficient System
Other aid groups have seen the difference this makes, and taken note. During the emergency in Haiti World Vision Canada has been able to showcase the technology, which has already received rave reviews in Kenya, Lesotho and Zimbabwe. World Vision is working with Haitian staff, to implement the system throughout the country.
“All eyes are on Haiti right now,” explains Chris Visser, Manager of Web Development, who travelled to Haiti to introduce the new system. “Everyone’s looking for ways to improve things for the people. World Food Programme staff were amazed with our technology, and are anxious to use it more broadly.”
