Home gardens feed undernourished children
Graciela Zuniga's two youngest children were both sickly when World Vision's health promoter diagnosed them with malnutrition. Henry and Katia, and their mother were quickly enrolled in a Food Safety Program offered in Tacuba, El Salvador.

Along with other mothers of malnourished children, Graciela was taught about the nutritional value of different foods and vitamin supplements. They were then provided with seeds, so they could create their own vegetable gardens at home. A World Vision agriculture technician instructed them on organic agriculture and proper growing techniques.

Graciela now grows beetroot, radishes, onions, pepper, tomatoes, cabbage, lettuce cucumbers and soybeans - all rich in vitamins, minerals and proteins - supplementing the family's traditional diet of corn, rice and beans. She even has a little over to sell; with the proceeds, she buys other products the family cannot produce on its own.

With Katia and Henry both healthy and gaining weight, Graciela is grateful for all the assistance she received from World Vision Canada, which funds the work in Tacuba.
