G8 Summit 2008

Overall, World Vision is disappointed with the outcome of the G8 Summit in Japan.

However, our collective efforts did seem to pay off—as some key goals that were missing in pre-summit communiqué drafts were reinstated in the final document. Here’s a quick summary:

HIV and AIDS
There were no firm commitments to the prevention of mother to child transmission and paediatric treatment. Commitment to work toward universal access to treatment by 2010 was maintained.

Global Food crisis
The G8 leaders pledged $10 billion to tackle the current food crisis. However, they did not take steps to tackle the underlying causes of the food crisis—including the promotion of trade agreements that support small agricultural producers.

Aid
After early signals that leaders were backing down from a promise to double aid by 2010, the final summit communiqué restated this promise. Unfortunately leaders failed to make firm plans to achieve the target, instead deferring this discussion to a September summit in New York.

Your Voice
More than 10,000 World Vision supporters sent messages to the Prime Minister prior to the G8 Summit urging action on child health. Your lobbying was key to keeping 2010 as a target year for improving children’s health worldwide.
