Five Steps for Successful Volunteering

Canadians love to volunteer. According to Statistics Canada, more than 11 million Canadians have discovered volunteering—that's more than a third of the country's population!

Given its popularity, it's not surprising that those who participate in volunteering say they love doing so. And the feeling is certainly reciprocated. Individuals and organizations helped by volunteers say they truly appreciate their volunteers.

Being Truly Helpful
But, if you've ever had someone volunteer to help you with a project, you know that some volunteers are actually more helpful than others. Think of your six-year-old offering to balance your chequing account—a volunteer's enthusiasm sometimes outweighs their actual benefit. So if you've decided to give volunteering a try, here is a five-step guide to making sure you are the very best volunteer you can be:

1 Be realistic about your time.
Serving in a soup kitchen once a month sounds great on paper, but you have to find the time on your calendar to actually do it. Don't commit to something you just can't do. If you realize you are getting in over your head, admit it right away. It's better to bow out gracefully than not show up when you're needed.

2 Look around you first.
There may be a real need right in front of you that you and your family can help with. Is there a senior whose driveway needs to be shovelled? A shut-in who requires groceries? A single mom who could use some yard work? These might be great areas for you and your family to serve in a "one-off" opportunity to give. And once you taste the joy of volunteering, you probably will want to keep going!

3 It's okay to enjoy yourself.
Volunteers will enjoy themselves more, and probably stick around longer if they are doing something they enjoy for a cause they are passionate about. Has your life been touched by a certain cause or movement? Sometimes we need to respond to the needs in front of us, but it doesn't hurt to find a volunteer niche that fits us just right.

4 Be prepared for some scrutiny.
Most organizations will have questions about your experience, your skills, and your availability. You may have to fill out an application, provide references, and even complete a police background check. Set defensiveness aside. These safeguards help protect the organization you care about. It's a good thing.

5 Be prepared for some unexpected benefits.
According to Stats Canada, a whopping 79 percent of volunteers said their volunteer activities improved their interpersonal skills and 78 percent said they learned skills they could use in the paid workforce. And there is no doubt about it, volunteering feels great. It does a world of good for Canada and it can change your own world for the better. Go for it!
