Farmer develops organic fertilizer
Ecuadorian farmer Juan Upaya has put the agricultural training he received from World Vision to good use. Taking what he learned about natural organic fertilizers, Upaya began experimenting on his own until he came up with the right mixture of ingredients for a new product.
Upaya calls his creation BIOL. The mixture of phosphorus, calcium and potassium has proven useful in growing potatoes, Andean beans, corn and other indigenous vegetables.
Upaya first test-marketed BIOL in his own community, Shumid, for seven months. With his success in Shumid, he began marketing BIOL at the market in Macaji, where he found other farmers from the region receptive to his new product.
His customers are pleased with the results and the fact that, by using BIOL, they can leave healthy land to their children on which they will be able to feed subsequent generations.
