"It’s fun helping out with chickens," Melaka , 10
Gift Catalogue

As part of a project funded by World Vision Canada’s Gift Catalogue, Zenzile, 44, received 11 chickens two years ago. Her family now has 63.

Zenzile’s children help her and her husband care for the chickens. Both Zenzile’s daughter, Melaka Moreblessing Moyo, 10, and her neice, Sizalobuhle Nxumalo, 10, say they enjoy giving the chickens food and water. "It’s fun helping out with chickens,"

The income from the chicken sales has helped her family in different ways. With earnings from the chickens, Zenzile paid the last two years of school fees for her children. Before Zenzile received the chickens, she worried about paying school fees for her children. "It was not easy," she says. "I think it’s very important for them to go to school."

Beyond being a source of income and nutrition, the chickens have given Zenzile the opportunity to help others in her community. Zenzile has given some chickens to her neighbours. "I gave them to the people who are in need. Especially those who are starting their homes with nothing," Zenzile says.

Melaka adds, "I really appreciate the support (Canadian donors) have given my family. I am very grateful. I realize my mother is taking care of us because what (they’ve) given us."
