World Vision combines the funds from child sponsorship with government grants and gifts-in-kind to work with communities toward long-lasting change.
Child Sponsorship
In 2006, more than 103,000 children were sponsored in Malawi, including more than 16, 000 children sponsored by Canadians.

Government Grants
Through the financial support of Canadians, the Canadian government and various multinational organizations, World Vision implemented a 10-year micronutrient and health program in five African countries, including Malawi.
The program ran until 2005, benefiting almost five million people in Malawi with such activities as:
- Distributing more than one million tree seedlings
- Constructing more than 12,500 latrines
- Training almost 400 health workers to educate communities about nutrition and health
The results in the areas where the program operated include:
- The elimination of cholera and other waterborne diseases
- Anemia decreased by 16 per cent
- Stunting among children under the age of five decreased by 16 per cent
- Malaria in children under the age of five decreased by 60 per cent
