At the age of 15, Zeyinaba became a woman—her genitals were cut away and she was married. The dangerous procedure Zeyinaba was forced to endure is a practice know as female genital mutilation (FGM).
Without heed of race or religion, FGM is practiced around the world, and sees girls put through agonizingly painful and life-threatening surgery for reasons that vary from superstition to long-standing cultural customs.
Nicolette Beharie, managing editor of Childview, travelled to Ethiopia to document the stories of people affected by FGM and to learn more about how World Vision is educating communities about the harmful practice.
