Tsunami in Indonesia
Indonesia is once again mourning its dead and scrambling to recover following a destructive tsunami. The powerful wave, triggered by a 7.2-magnitude earthquake, hit the southern coast of Java island on July 17.
The tsunami killed more than 520 people and injured hundreds. At least 275 people are still missing and 50,000 have been displaced from their homes. Damage from the tsunami has been reported along a 200-kilometre stretch of Java's coastline.
World Vision does not operate any child sponsorship programs in the region, and therefore no sponsored children were affected. Staff members in Indonesia are monitoring the situation.
Indonesia has suffered several natural disasters in recent memory. In May, an earthquake in the region of Yogyakarta killed more than 6,000 people and displaced more than 200,000. In December 2004, the Indian Ocean tsunami claimed 130,000 lives in Indonesia, more than any other country.
