World Vision's piglet credit program helps support children and their families in the African country of Chad.
Four years ago, sponsored child Jonas Mbaississem, his mother, and three siblings were forced to move in with his uncle's family when his father died.
Through the piglet credit program, World Vision gave nine-year-old Jonas a sow that has since given birth to seven piglets. These piglets generate additional money and food for Jonas' family. The extra income will also help pay for school fees and notebooks.
Jonas is one of 326 children who have received piglets on credit. In return, the children are asked to donate four female pigs back to the program for distribution to others in need.
Staff members provided each family with concrete to build pigsties, and taught them how to how to care for their pigs.
World Vision also gave 12 boars to the community for reproduction purposes. Staff members trained five community members on veterinary techniques, and provided them with bicycles for visiting the families.
In less than a year the 326 sows have given birth to 453 piglets. Staff member, Felix Mbete anticipates the number of piglets will increase to more than 1,000 in another six months.
