At 16, Arturo Francisco Hernandez of Valle de Chalco, Mexico, is looking forward to graduating high school—thanks to his Canadian child sponsor. Here, Arturo tells how he in turn is making sure other children have the same opportunities he's had.

I've lived all my life in this neighbourhood. Valle's streets aren't paved, and there aren't many jobs. My own family of five lives in a two-room house, and most of our neighbours are also very poor.

When I was seven, a neighbour told my mother about World Vision. Soon, child sponsorship was paying for our school supplies and shoes, so my two sisters and I could stay in school. Carolina, my Canadian sponsor, sent me letters and cards that were so encouraging. I sent back cards, updates, photos, and drawings, so she would know what I was doing.

World Vision also helped our community—painting the school, building new classrooms, and improving housing.

Child sponsorship showed me that people are good and are willing to help. Now, I'm trying to extend my own hand to others.

I saw children who were being mistreated or living on the streets, and I knew they deserved a dignified life. Through World Vision, I became involved in children's rights and fighting poverty. I took part in several meetings with children from different organizations, where we shared our points of view. I've also spoken at World Vision events and on the radio.

In three years I'll complete high school. I want to go to college to become a teacher or a social worker so I can work closely with people who need help.

Child sponsorship gave me opportunities to meet new people and to gain self-confidence. I encourage people to sponsor children still suffering in poverty. We need to help them.
