Japan: World Vision’s Disaster Response
Share Now

The outpouring of support for World Vision’s emergency response to the earthquake and tsunami in Japan has been great, allowing us to bring immediate help and support to families and children in the affected communities.

Thankfully, World Vision Canada has received enough support from the Canadian public to date to fully fund its planned emergency response and recovery operations in cooperation with World Vision Japan over the next two years.

World Vision is working closely with local Japanese authorities to provide relief supplies to families in the stricken communities.

Your support has helped provide supplies for 17,000 people and assisted in the development of several Child-Friendly Spaces in Tome and Minami Sanriku, allowing children space to play and feel secure.

Although we are not currently asking for ongoing donations for Japan, your continued support helps us respond immediately to humanitarian emergencies and provide aid to children and families around the world when they need it most. You can donate to our general disaster response fund and your donations will be used where most needed during a humanitarian disaster.

World Vision responds to some 75 disasters every year and the disaster response fund provides resources for us to continue working in critical emergencies around the world.

On the Ground in Japan
Staff and volunteers from World Vision Japan have visited the communities of Minami Sanriku, which was devastated by the tsunami, and Tome, where thousands of people from the affected areas remain homeless and in shelters. In both communities, we are distributing blankets, diapers, clothing and sanitary supplies for both women and babies. See photos of these deliveries.

Staff distribute toys to children at a World Vision Child-Friendly Space in Tome. Watch this CNN video to see how these spaces are helping kids in Japan recover.

In a Child-Friendly Space, World Vision Japan staff help children regain a sense of normalcy through play and educational activities.

Staff distribute hygiene kits to people displaced by the disaster in Tome. Kits include items such as, soap, shampoo, hand sanitizer, toothbrushes, face towels and bathroom tissue.
