Across the globe, women often face discrimination in a variety of forms. Many times, they are confronted with limited educational and work opportunities, and subjected to physical and sexual violence.
To change this grim reality, World Vision is actively assisting women by encouraging equal treatment and helping provide better business, educational and health-care opportunities.
The following are three examples of the ways in which World Vision is working to improve the lives of women around the world.
Small-business loans help women generate income for their families. |
Small-business Loans
World Vision's small-business loans program helps thousands of poor entrepreneurs work their way out of poverty. Most loan recipients are women, who use the income they generate to benefit their children.
World Vision provides credit, business coaching and access to markets. This enables women to participate in the marketplace and earn their way to a better life.

Adequate medical care enables women to live healthier lives. |
Health Care and Education
World Vision promotes healthy choices for pregnant and breastfeeding women.
Where possible, World Vision refers HIV-positive mothers to health clinics for medical care and education. At these clinics, women can receive medication that decreases the chance of transmitting the virus to their unborn children or through breastfeeding later on.

Gender equality initiatives assist women in gaining integration into all aspects of society. |
Empowerment for Women
Gender equality and empowering women are goals integrated into all aspects of World Vision's work.
Globally, World Vision partners with communities to ensure that violence, disability or discrimination will not prevent women and girls from exercising their basic human rights.
Each year, World Vision observes International Women's Day by holding workshops and supporting rallies for women's rights. Staff members promote the participation of women on committees and encourage them to find solutions to problems that affect their communities.
