Over one million children in Kenya started attending school when the government abolished primary school fees in 2003. But the influx of so many children has resulted in severely overcrowded classrooms, making it difficult for children to learn.
Education is too Expensive
Moreover, impoverished families—many of whom live on less than $1 a day—cannot afford fees for uniforms, books, transportation, or school supplies. As a result, many students have since dropped out.
Primary education costs at public schools in Kenya:
Tuition |
$8/month |
| Books and supplies |
$17/year |
| Uniforms |
$25/each |
| Lunch |
30¢/day |
| Transportation |
60¢/day |
World Vision is There
Here are some examples of how World Vision is helping children stay in school thanks to the support of Canadians who sponsor more than 11,500 children in Kenya:
- Since 2003, staff members have built 30 classrooms and three nursery schools, benefiting more than 900 children.
- Students received 5,000 school uniforms, books, and school supplies.
- World Vision helped provide free meals at several schools to encourage regular attendance.
- Fifty teachers participated in World Vision training on effective teaching methods, children's rights, early childhood education, and care for HIV/AIDS-affected children.
