BE AWARE OF FRAUDULENT FUNDRAISING
We are distressed that generous and unsuspecting people might be taken advantage of by someone using World Vision’s good name to solicit or steal donations that were intended to help children and communities, especially people in Haiti. Be aware of suspicious fundraising activities and help us fight fraud.
Fraudulent canvassers
Criminals posing as fake staff or fundraisers for World Vision appear to be committing fraud against potential donors. Since the earthquake in Haiti last month, our office has received some reports of people asking for cash donations for World Vision. These reports appeared to be donor fraud. We have reported our suspicions to the police and will cooperate fully with any investigation. While we are aware of only a few isolated incidents involving World Vision, we want to ensure that our donors and the public are aware of and protected from this fraud.
We keep a careful record of all of our fundraising programs. We are conducting legitimate door-to-door fundraising in several areas across the country at this time. If you are approached or contacted by a fundraiser claiming to be from World Vision, but have concerns about the representative or the fundraising appeal, we encourage you to contact us.
Here are some important things to know:
- World Vision fundraisers never accept cash donations.
- All our canvassers can be identified by a World Vision name badge and identification number, which they will freely provide. Our call centre staff can confirm whether the request for donations is legitimate.
- Any donations made online at this site are secure and encrypted for your protection.
If you feel that you have been contacted fraudulently by someone on behalf of World Vision or any other charity, we would be grateful for more information. As well, you may contact your local police department directly.
The Government of Canada has also provided information on how to join the fight against fraud. More useful information is available here.
Thank you for standing with us against fundraising fraud. We are grateful for the support of so many Canadians in partnering with us to make a positive difference in the lives of children, families and communities in the developing world. At any time, we welcome any questions you may have about our fundraising, our financial records and work around the world.
