2010 Update – World Vision's Fight for 5

Thank you for your generous support of World Vision's Fight for 5 campaign last spring. Through the support of caring Canadians like you, we have been able to help children at risk in Kenya, Cambodia, Nepal, Sri Lanka and other countries.

Thousands of Canadians joined the Fight for 5 and helped us in our 2010 goal to raise enough to assist more than 250,000 children and their families. The projects funded by this campaign are now bringing about changes that are nothing short of remarkable.

A community moves from hunger to hope

Improving nutrition is making an incredible impact for children in Samilu, a small community in south-eastern Kenya.

At one time, the people of Samuli were resilient to harsh droughts that came once every decade or so. But three consecutive years of drought compromised their ability to cope. Families were struggling, drained of fundamental resources.

"We depend on our animals for milk," says Josephine, secretary of a women's group, describing the impact of the drought on the community. "But without water there is not enough grass so the animals cannot produce milk."

World Vision has helped the community rally, providing local groups with resources and support to take action.

Helping families establish new sources of nutrition

The local women's group received chickens to diversify the community's nutrition. "We are happy that the children will be able to get another source of protein other than the milk," says Grace, another member of the women's group. "We are also hoping to be able to sell the eggs."

Women also learned how to identify and prepare locally-available plants that offer a good source of nutrition."We used to go very far to buy vegetables since we did not know that we had vegetables within our reach," says Josephine. "The children like the vegetables and they are growing well."

A model farm teaches local farmers how to effectively plant, plough and seed. The model farm belongs to Gilbert Koikai. It’s a lush field in an otherwise dry landscape. "I want other farmers to have what I have," says Gilbert. "They are shocked when they first see it but they are happy that it is possible."

Your support is improving nutrition for children – and an entire community

Families now have better access to nutritious food. Eggs and farm vegetables are sold in the community at subsidized prices. And because the mothers in the women's group know the pain of not having enough for their children, they have resolved to give a free ration of eggs to those who cannot afford them.

Sponsoring a child is one more way you can help a struggling child and community. See the communities World Vision works in around the world.
