World Vision Canada’s President Dave Toycen met Esperance on his visit to the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
|
From the President
Esperance was a calm presence in that noisy health clinic in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Despite her life’s challenges, she stayed focused on the most important thing of all—the well-being of the baby boy in her lap who’d been battling illness for the past six months. Esperance’s husband had been disabled when war left a bullet lodged permanently in his brain. She single-handedly grows food for the two of them and their four children: a mother who just doesn’t quit, no matter what life brings her way.
Stories like that of Esperance never fail to inspire, to teach. At a time of financial uncertainty, World Vision is determined to care for children in the same way their mothers would—with an unwavering focus on their well-being.
I’m grateful to the 594,395 supporters who shared that vision, giving faithfully to World Vision Canada through these tough times. Thanks to you, the economic downturn did not impact the programming we provided to the children in our care. Consider what this meant to baby José in Peru, who was properly nourished during that crucial first year of his life. Think of Bintou in Mauritania who completed her year in school, rather than spending the days fetching water. Remember Cintya in Indonesia, whose new birth certificate will help protect her and give her greater access to healthcare and education.
Young lives don’t simply go on hold while economic crises resolve. We stand by these children at all times, no matter what’s happening in the world. World Vision has just launched a new three-year Strategic Plan, maintaining that crucial focus on child well-being. We all want to ensure that children are well-nourished, educated, protected from harm and able to participate in community life.
Join with me as we implement this plan, working to improve the well-being of the children in our programs. We’ll be calling on our government and all Canadians to join with us. Within World Vision, we won’t rest until we’ve found every possible organizational improvement. As an organization that follows the way of Jesus, we have no other choice.
