Focus on Advocacy and Justice for Children
In Canada and around the world, World Vision seeks to promote change in the policies and practices of those who exercise power. We work for social and economic conditions that allow children to enjoy life to the full. We also empower communities and children with knowledge of their rights and how to exercise them.
In 2009, our advocacy for children included:
- Following a four-year campaign led by World Vision, the United Nations launched a new process so children can seek remedies when their rights are violated.
- We sought to protect women and children affected by sexual violence in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, providing advice to UN officials on the ground and government officials here at home.
- World Vision’s Youth Ambassadors, chosen for their leadership abilities, worked with youth in Tanzania to form a regional council of clubs taking action on community development and the environment. Youth are key advocates for children, and we continued to engage them in issues of justice through our Youth Action Zone.
- We launched Five for 5, a worldwide campaign to help prevent unnecessary deaths in children the age of five. Nearly 24,000 children die every day from preventable causes such as pneumonia, diarrhea and malnutrition. Five for 5 is a key part of our global campaign, Child Health Now.
- Some 8,000 Canadians took action for justice through the World Vision Justice Network.
