World Vision mounts massive response as number of dead soars

Mississauga, December 26, 2004 - Thousands are dead and millions are affected as the worst earthquake in 40 years hits Southeast Asia. Hardest hit countries include Sri Lanka, India, Indonesia and Thailand, with fears that more aftershocks will hit following the 8.9 magnitude quake.

"Hundreds of families are searching for children who have likely been swept out to sea," says Grant Cassidy, Canadian aid worker who is helping with the relief efforts from India. Extensive damage includes houses, cars and boats swept away. Thousands of families have lost everything and are in a state of shock.

"This Boxing Day, we are asking Canadians to dig deep and respond to this unprecedented disaster," says Dave Toycen, World Vision president. " Initial response will include food rations, emergency shelter, and items such as blankets, cooking utensils, mosquito nets and water purification tablets."

World Vision is appealing for $1.5 million dollars from Canadians to help with the distribution of initial needs. Food distribution is well under way and regional teams are moving towards isolated areas to provide aid.

World Vision, with more than three decades experience in the region, has responded to similar disasters but this is unprecedented in its scale and scope.

"Our hearts go out to the many families who are struggling for survival and suffering with grief in Southeast Asia," says Dave Toycen. "World Vision urges Canadians to respond generously to these innocent victims."
