World Vision begins aid distribution in Southeast Asia as millions of people are affected

Canadians donate more than $40,000 in just under six hours

Mississauga, December 27, 2004 - World Vision is mobilizing all of its Asia-based relief workers to some of the hardest-hit areas of Southeast Asia, providing immediate emergency relief. With the death toll now at more than 20,000 people and millions affected, World Vision has mounted large-scale emergency relief operations.

"We are encouraged by the generosity of Canadians but the need is still great and we are imploring Canadians to continue to give generously," says Dave Toycen, president of World Vision Canada. "Thousands of families have lost everything and the money Canadians are donating is providing much-needed shelter, food and clean water."

World Vision Canada has already committed $100,000 (USD) towards emergency relief that will include items such as water purification tablets, mosquito nets, blankets, food rations and plastic sheeting. The Christian humanitarian aid organization has launched an appeal to Canadians for $1.5 million to help provide for families reeling from shock and grief.

"Our hearts go out to the many families who are struggling for survival and suffering with grief in Southeast Asia," says Dave Toycen. "World Vision urges Canadians to respond generously to these innocent victims."
