World Vision Responds to Emergency in Alor, Indonesia

Mississauga ON - World Vision is responding to an earthquake which struck the small island of Alor, some 1,000 kilometers east of the resort island of Bali. Tremors where felt in neighboring East Timor. The quake was followed by aftershocks in the region. Hospitals in  the tiny island were struggling to cope with the 165 people injured in the quake, with at least 93 of them sustaining serious injuries.

World Vision is responding with a $125,000 fund to assist the people of Alor. World Vision is supplying drinking water to sustain residents in addition to 500 packages of cooking utensils, 500 water buckets, 1000 sarongs (clothing) and 500 pieces of plastic sheeting. In addition the organization is also providing basic medicine along with about $5,000 worth of  rice and cooking oil.

Since 1960 World Vision organization has helped Indonesian families become self-supporting and during the recent economic downturn world vision has delivered food aid in Jakarta and throughout the country to hardest hit areas. The organization regularly responds to Indonesia's periodic flooding, earthquakes and typhoon in this ethnically diverse and sprawling island nation.
