Philippines reeling from four typhoons in two weeks
December 03, 2004

37,000 families need emergency assistance

Phillipines Typhoon

More than 1,000 people are feared dead and 37,000 families are in need of assistance after four typhoons swept through the Philippines over the past two weeks. Floods and landslides have forced many of those affected into emergency shelters where the risk of disease is high.

World Vision is on the ground in Aurora and Quezon provinces, two of the hardest hit areas. Washed out roads have made access difficult for those delivering aid.  Yesterday, a World Vision worker and several volunteers walked 12 hours through knee-high mud to deliver relief goods to the town of Real, a distance of 20-kilometres.

World Vision is distributing food as well as emergency non-food items including blankets, mats, towels, cooking and kitchen utensils, soap, clothing and water containers to meet immediate health concerns.

The organization is calling on Canadians for assistance in responding to this disaster.

World Vision is an international Christian relief and development organization working in more than 90 countries around the world, providing help to more than 85 million people each year.
