World Vision Shelters House 20,000 as Cyclone Sidr Hits Bangladesh
MISSISSAUGA, Ont. (Nov 15, 2007) — At least half a million people have fled their homes after a monster cyclone made landfall in Bangladesh on Thursday. Some 20,000 have taken refuge in cyclone-resistant shelters built previously by World Vision.
World Vision is also responding with a $632,000 worth of relief aid including rice, oil, sugar, salt, candles, blankets, mattresses and clothing for 20,000 families in southern Bangladesh – one of the world’s most densely populated nations.
“Some of our staff are staying with the people in the shelters and as soon as the storm passes, they will be going out to assess the damage and the needs,” said Vince Edwards, National Director for World Vision Bangladesh.
Cyclone Sidr also hit India’s state of Western Bengal, including Kolkata (Calcutta), with high winds and rains. World Vision staff in the Kolkata region are also on red alert to respond as needed.
World Vision has conducted community development in Bangladesh for nearly 40 years and in India for more than 50 years. Canadians sponsor 15,885 children in Bangladesh and 30,573 children in India.
World Vision is accepting donations to help those affected by the cyclone. Those wishing to help can visit WorldVision.ca or call 1-800-268-5528.
