World Vision responds to earthquake in northern Chile

MISSISSAUGA, Ont. (Nov 15, 2007) — World Vision is rushing tents, blankets and other relief supplies to families affected by the earthquake that shook mountainous northern Chile on Wednesday.

“The immediate needs are water, food and shelter. Many people are on the streets, terrified to go back into their broken homes,” said Paula Saez of World Vision Chile.

At least two people were killed and over 100 wounded when the 7.7-Richter scale earthquake hit areas in and around Antofagasta. Aftershocks continued through the night into the morning. People are very frightened and complained of not being able to sleep because of the noise and movement caused by the aftershocks, Saez said.

World Vision blankets and tents are due to arrive on a Chilean military transport to Antofagasta soon and later sent to Tocopilla, one of the worst-hit cities. Saez said about 80 per cent of houses seem to be damaged or destroyed in Tocopilla and there is no running water or electricity. The supermarkets are closed and firemen and police are patrolling to prevent looting. In nearby Maria Elena, Saez said about half of the population of about 10,000 were homeless, sleeping outside their collapsed or damaged homes and building fires to stay warm as it was cold overnight in the desert.

World Vision has conducted community development in Chile for more than 25 years. World Vision donors assist 45,000 children, including 3,586 children sponsored by Canadians.
