Programs Supported by the World Vision 30 Hour Famine

Each year, funds raised by the World Vision 30 Hour Famine are used to support programs targeting children at risk of malnutrition, disease and death. This year, the World Vision 30 Hour Famine proceeds will focus on food security, nutrition and clean water programs as well as other child focused programs like protection from conflict, education, medical care and HIV and AIDS.

Last year, more than 80% of the funds received by World Vision Canada went to helping children and communities in need.

Here are some of the programs funded this year:

Cambodia: Reducing Infant and Maternal Deaths
In Cambodia maternal mortality is high and childhood deaths are frequently caused by preventable diseases. Funds from the World Vision 30 Hour Famine campaign will continue to support programs that reduce infant and maternal mortality through nutrition programs. Mothers will be trained in pre and post-natal care to prevent infant mortality.

Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea): Food for Life
North Korea is facing a food shortage. Funding will provide food processing centres with wheat flour to use in producing daily lunches for more than 47,600 children. The goal is to improve and maintain the health and nutrition of children.

Ethiopia: Livelihood Enhancement
Livestock is the main source of livelihood for many families in Ethiopia. However, low levels of rainfall, land annexation and rising grain prices are causing their livelihoods to deteriorate. Funds from the World Vision 30 Hour Famine will assist livestock breeding programs and provide resources to improve the health of livestock, thus helping Ethiopian families increase their household incomes and build economic resiliency.

India: Food Security
India is facing a malnutrition emergency that is jeopardizing the lives of children, women and families. Funds from the World Vision 30 Hour Famine will help identify malnourished children and improve their nutritional status. Mothers will receive training in breastfeeding techniques, regular medical check-ups and monitoring.

Nicaragua: Nutrition and Food Security
Agricultural exploitation and the degradation of water and forestry resources have disrupted farming communities in Nicaragua, lowering household income levels and increasing malnutrition rates. Funds from the World Vision 30 Hour Famine will help provide agricultural training, tools and resources to improve the living conditions within the community with a focus on food security and nutrition.

Uganda: Initiating Peace
The inability to resolve conflicts peacefully and deal with the difficulties of daily life in Uganda has made many children and families vulnerable to violence. Funds from the World Vision 30 Hour Famine will continue supporting operations for community outreach programs for formerly abducted children through peace-building activities in schools, along with the training of local leaders in conflict resolution and human rights issues.
