World Vision says “thank you” to the more than 90,000 people
January 17, 2005
More than 90,000 people responded to our Tsunami Emergency appeal
As those of us at World Vision who have responded to emergencies for decades watched in horror as the terrible events of December 26 unfolded, we knew we would need more public support than we had ever asked for. We set a goal of $50 million and prayed we would be able to give all the help that would be needed.
Canadians have always responded generously in emergencies but we were not prepared for the tremendous outpouring of compassion over the past two weeks. As many as 7,000 people called World Vision to donate each day and more than half a million people visited www.worldvision.ca to do their part.
By January 11-the government deadline for matching the donations of individual Canadians-giving surpassed our goal.
Thank you.
Businesses, foundations, community organizations, schools and churches responded quickly and generously with much needed supplies and donations. Air Canada provided planes to deliver relief supplies to Banda Aceh.
Countless artists, broadcasters and famous Canadians, led by Tom Cochrane and the CBC, took on the tremendous task of organizing Canada for Asia, giving voice to the millions of Canadians who share the vision for a better future for the children, families and communities in Southeast Asia.
Thank you.
Because of generous Canadians, hundreds of thousands of people affected by the crisis are receiving food, clean water, clothing, medical care and shelter. And we will be able to stay to help them rebuild their homes, businesses, schools, hospitals and communities. Because of our donors, the people of Southeast Asia can find hope in their despair. Again, on behalf of our staff members in Southeast Asia and the people they are working to serve, we say thank you for your kind words and your generous deeds.
God bless you all.
