World Vision Responding to Hurricane Dean in Mexico
August 21, 2007
MISSISSAUGA, Ont. - World Vision's local emergency relief team is on the ground in the worst hit areas of Mexico assessing damages done by Hurricane Dean that flooded streets, toppled trees and blew off rooftops.
"Our main worry is the communities in the south of the state. Children and families in the lowlands are the most vulnerable," said Aldo Pontecorvo, Director of Humanitarian and Emergency Affairs for World Vision Mexico.
World Vision's emergency relief team is now in Mérida in Yucatan Peninsula, assessing damages and preparing to distribute blankets, sheets, personal hygiene articles and medicines.
World Vision has been engaged in development projects throughout Mexico since 1963. More than 40,000 children in Mexico are supported by World Vision sponsors, including 4,250 children sponsored by Canadians.
World Vision is accepting donations to help those affected by the hurricane. Canadians wishing to donate can click here or call 1-800-268-5528.
