Survival kits reviewed and unloaded in Chad
Mississauga, ON., June 14, 2004 - World Vision airlifted needed survival kits yesterday, despite dust damage to the cargo plane, for hundreds of thousands of Sudanese refugees pouring into Chad. The goods will benefit up to 100,000 Sudanese refugees now living in extremely harsh conditions in eastern Chad. The airlift contained thousands of household items, including plastic sheeting, water containers, kitchen sets and water purification tablets.
More than one million Sudanese have been displaced by the current unrest in the western region of the country. According to assessment reports, about 180,000 Sudanese refugees have already entered Chad. The number of refugees has steadily increased and the country's rainy season will likely escalate the number of displaced people to more than 400,000.
World Vision will provide additional relief to the thousands of refugees, mainly women and children, who are facing extremely difficult living conditions. The current refugee camps are filling to capacity. More help is urgently needed.
