Animal Husbandry

Animal husbandry is the practice of caring for and managing livestock so that the animal’s needs and the farmer’s needs (i.e., nutrition, income, labour, fertilizer and fuel) are both met.

World Vision is concerned about animal husbandry and takes steps to ensure that best practices are followed at all times within the local recipient communities.

The gift of animals also includes:

  • nutritional training by World Vision staff to help families maximize the health benefits they receive
  • animals that can be purchased locally and are appropriate to the local environment
  • recipient training in animal care/husbandry (health/nutrition)
  • appropriate shelter provided by the recipients
  • veterinary fees for vaccinations if they are not available in the community
  • veterinary examination of all livestock/animals before delivery
