The evidence is everywhere; the ways in which Canadians are choosing to build and sustain a sense of community are clearly changing.
With working women the rule rather than the exception, urban populations expanding, commuting distances growing longer, and technological innovations changing our day-to-day behaviours, people are also adapting how they connect with and care for one another.
Whereas families might have once gathered weekly around the Sunday dinner table, today, many families are huddling ‘round computer screens for Skype calls. Not so long ago people sent cards and letters to convey good wishes and mark special occasions. Today, they’re more likely to pass along jokes, photos and messages via email, or to post a message on the wall of a Facebook friend.
The human need for community is fundamental. And in calling His followers to care for one another in community, Jesus set a new standard; teaching us to love one another as He loves us, not just to love others as we love ourselves. In other words, Christ calls us to love others with the love of God.
So this issue of WorldWatch, we’re focusing on cultivating community. Why do we need it? How do we build it? And once we know we have it, how do we keep it strong and growing?
